Old Testament – Today in Leviticus chapter 23 we read about the Appointed Festivals!  The NIV Study Bible has a great chart summarizing the Old Testament Feasts and Other Sacred Days, which is significantly paraphrased below with just Name & Purpose:

1. Sabbath – Rest for people and animals
2. Sabbath Year – Rest for land.
3. Year of Jubilee – Help for poor; stabilize society.
4. Passover – Remember Israel’s deliverance from Egypt.
5. Unleavened Bread – Remember how the Lord brought the Israelites out of Egypt in haste.
6. Firstfruits – Recognize the Lord’s bounty in the land.
7. Weeks (Pentecost or Harvest) – Show joy and thankfulness for the Lord’s blessing of harvest.
8. Trumpets (Rosh Hashanah-New Year’s Day) – Present Israel before the Lord for his favor.
9. Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) – Atone for the sins of priests and people and purify the Holy Place.
10. Tabernacles (Booths or Ingathering) – Memorialize the journey from Egypt to Canaan; give thanks for the productivity of Canaan.
11. Sacred Assembly – Commemorate the closing of the cycle of feasts.
12. Purim – Remind the Israelites of their national deliverance in the time of Esther.
13. Hanukkah (Feast of Dedication or Festival of Lights) – Commemorated the purification of the temple and altar in the Maccabean period.
14.  New moons were also often special feast days.
(Above is from Zondervan’s "NIV Study Bible” pp. 176-177) Below is a Jewish calendar, which includes many of the feasts and sacred days listed above:

New Testament – Mark chapter 9 verses 33-35 always stand out to me and I personally always need to be reminded of Jesus’ teaching here in the last sentence: "Jesus asked them, "What were you discussing out on the road?"  But they didn’t answer, because they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest. He sat down and called the twelve disciples over to him. Then he said, "Anyone who wants to be the first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else."  How are you doing on this last sentence?  Are you taking last place?  Are you the servant of everyone else?  Do you think this last sentence applies to Jesus’ life?  Do you think we should model how Jesus lived his life?

I came across an artistic image I liked a lot, below, which applies to verses 36 & 37… except of course that the child is wearing very modern day clothes – keep in mind it is art! 🙂 –  "Then he put a little child among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, "Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes my Father who sent me."

Psalms – Psalm 44 verse 3 is a wise statement about where the Israelites and our true strength and victory in life comes from! "They did not conquer the land with their swords; it was not their own strength that gave them victory. It was by your mighty power that they succeeded; it was because you favored them and smiled on them."

Proverbs – Proverbs chapter 10 verse 19 today teaches us: "Don’t talk too much, for it fosters sin. Be sensible and turn off the flow!" This is a wonderful reminder that we should listen at least twice as much as we talk!  That’s why we have 2 ears and one mouth…  🙂

Worship God: Psalm 44:3 reminded me of Third Day’s fantastic song "Show Me Your Glory."  Here’s a live version.

Please join us in memorizing and meditating on a verse of Scripture this week: "Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me." John 15:4 NIV

Comments from You & Questions of the Day:  Based on Psalm 44:3 above – as you look back on your life and at the good things that have happened to you, do you think that these things occurred because of your own power or work alone?  Or, do you think it is possible that God’s hand was blessing your life through all of those good things – even if maybe you did not notice God was there at the time?  Can you think of some instances in your life that when you look back on them you realize that God was absolutely there and blessing what was taking place?  Also, what verses or insights stand out to you in today’s readings?  Please post up by clicking on the "Comments" link below!

God bless,
Mike

    Lisa,
    “… There shall none be defiled for the dead among his people:
    2 But for his kin, that is near unto him, that is, for his mother, and for his father, and for his son, and for his daughter, and for his brother.
    11 Neither shall he go in to any dead body, nor defile himself for his father, or for his mother;
    At first it looks like they can and then the latter verse seems like they cannot defile himself for the sake of the closest kins.”
    What I found:
    Verse 2 applies to priests.
    What was the purpose for these laws? To illustrate the purity and separation from sin that was to characterize the priest; a dead body is a picture of sin’s result in this world, especially in the way it rapidly decays.
    Verse 11 applies to the High Priest only. The High priest did not have the latitude the priests under him did regarding relatives.

    Lev 19:20
    “due punishment” involved the restitution to the fiancee.
    This is the situation described: A slave girl is engaged to marry a free man, and then a different man has sex with her. Normally, the penalty was death; but because the woman was a slave, and presumed not free to resist (or guarded by a father), the penalty is not death. Yet, she is not marriable to her fiancée, so he must be reimbursed (the punishment mentioned). Then the moral guilt would be settled by sacrifice, and presumably, the man who had sex with her would be obliged to marry her.

    Psalm 44
    This Psalm is a national lament. It is broken up into past, present, and future. Today in these verses we look at the past.
    1 We have heard with our ears, O God;
    our fathers have told us
    what you did in their days,
    in days long ago.
    Deut4:9
    Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.
    Oral tradition was very important and commanded by God until the time when His Word would be written down. The people knew what God had done for them as it had been faithfully passed down from the beginning.
    ======================================================
    2 With your hand you drove out the nations
    and planted our fathers;
    you crushed the peoples
    and made our fathers flourish.
    Alternating about enemies and the Hebrew People. God planted them in their land – remember they were nomads before this time. always moving about living in tents from Abraham to the Exodus.
    “flourish” has the connotation of spreading across the land like a vine and its branches.
    ======================================================
    3 It was not by their sword that they won the land,
    nor did their arm bring them victory;
    it was your right hand, your arm,
    and the light of your face, for you loved them.
    The Hebrew People knew it was not about them or their skill at war. God did it – and God did it out of love and because of His promise to His people (faithfulness).
    ======================================================
    Appropriately the Hebrew people give God credit for the military victories. They acknowledge God as their King and God (Elohim).
    King implies that the peole are His servants (a lesson that should not be lost on us). Elohim is the name used in Genesis during the Creation. It exemplifies the power and might of the Creator and Judge of the Universe.
    8 In God we make our boast all day long,
    and we will praise your name forever.
    Selah
    We knew we would have victory and we praise your power and might forever. Selah – means “pause and reflect” and that is a good thing to do at this point 🙂

    Proverbs 10:19
    “When words are many, sin is not absent,
    but he who holds his tongue is wise.”
    The more we talk, the greater is the probability of saying something wrong. Compulsive talkers should beware! The lust for incessant conversation often leads to exaggeration, breaking of confidences, and associated sins. Trying to top someone else’s joke often mushrooms into off-color stories.
    The man who exercises self-control in his speech is wise. He saves himself from embarrassment, apologies, and outright sin.

    Leviticus 22:17-23:44
    Lev 22:
    31 “Keep my commands and follow them. I am the LORD. 32 Do not profane my holy name. I must be acknowledged as holy by the Israelites. I am the LORD, who makes you holy 33 and who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD.”
    We may not understand the reason behind all these laws and commands, and perhaps the Hebrew people did not either. But here is what the Lord says:
    1) I am the one true God.
    2) I must be acknowledged as Holy by my people – set apart, distinct, sacred.
    3) I am the one who makes you Holy – set apart, distinct – you can not do it on your own – I chose you.

    Leviticus 23
    The Sabbath
    3 ” ‘There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a Sabbath to the LORD.
    Again, I will say: The reason that the Sabbath was SO important to the Lord was – it is a picture of Salvation.
    One is to rest in the Lord, cease your work and toil – the same way we are to approach Salvation. Quit trying to work, earn your way, or toil for salvation. Just rest in the Lord, and let Him take care of Salvation. It is about God – not about us.

    Feast days
    Providing some links below to the Feast days – what they meant in Ot, and how they point to Christ.
    Only note I have is: Feast of Tabernacles in the end will be the only feast celebrated in the Kingdom and the new heavens and earth. Why? Because it represents the redemptive act of the Lord in delivering and saving His chosen people. The jews in OT, and all Believers in New Testament. All the other feast days will have been fulfilled, and this one is a remembrance and celebration of God’s perfect divine plan.

    I think that not only the good things that have occurred to me but I believe that everything that has occurred to me was made possible by the hand of God and the blessings that He chose to bestow upon me. As I look back over my life I can see why certain events happened in my life that prepared me for where I am today. If it hadn’t been for those events I wouldn’t be who I am or be doing what I’m doing; and most of all being happier than I’ve ever been. I attribute it all to God and His blessings. I have been truly blessed in all ways. I have a wonderful family and many wonderful friends. I have a great job that I love, a house that is almost mine that is warm in the winter and cool in the summer. I have transportation to get me where I want to go. I have the freedom to read and write whatever I want and I have the freedom to worship God in whatever way I want. I thank God every single day for all the blessings that He has given me. I don’t deserve them and I don’t take advantage of them because I also know that He can take them away anytime He pleases. Thank you my dear Lord and God for all the blessings that you’ve given me and show me where and how to share them with other people.
    God gives us two ears and one mouth for a reason. I love the picture of the basset hound! :-{D It is so true. We all need to learn how to listen twice and much as we talk. My dad taught me about this with a bit of rewording. He taught me that when our mouths are open, our ears are closed. I find that so true. When we are talking or especially interrupting, we are not listening. We all need to listen much more.
    Yours in Christ
